There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written, or badly written. That is all. – Oscar Wilde

Top Five Fantasy Comics (For People Who Don’t Read Comics)

April 7, 2015 by Caitlin

When asked the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions comic books, I’d warrant a guess that many people think “superheroes.” You know the type – square jawed and muscular, super-human talents and tights. I mean, this association isn’t wrong, but it’s where many literature enthusiasts I know often draw the line between books and comics – the superhero thing just doesn’t do it for those who get swept up in fantasy and folklore. Good news, everyone – […]

An Open Love Letter to Diana Wynne Jones – Film Fest Friday

May 23, 2014 by Caitlin

While it is indeed Film Fest Friday, I just  want to note that this entry also counts as an accomplishment: I crossed off my “Howl’s Moving Castle” square on Literary Bingo! Howl’s Moving Castle Book release: 1986 Movie release: 2004 Where to watch: I have one request – just try it with the original Japanese voice work. It’s charming, a little deadpan and sincere. And Calcifer! I love that crabby voice. I’ve loved Diana Wynne Jones since I was a kid. It […]

Game of Thrones, Season 4, Ep. 4 – Oathkeeper

April 28, 2014 by Erin

Hello everyone! Caitlin is on vacation so I’m filling in for her Game of Thrones weekly episode recap. Come back next week to find out some of Caitlin’s own thoughts on this episode, in which things finally start to progress toward some action! Last week Caitlin predicted that this week would probably have a bit more setup before things with Tyrion’s trial and what happens up at the wall and everything else really start moving, and she was totally right, but […]

Werewolf Gatorade – Literary Happy Hour

April 17, 2014 by Caitlin

What to read:Pleasure of a Dark Prince, Kresley Cole What to drink: Dewar’s Scotch Whiskey, Stone Ruination IPA “The demons took the opportunity to take a timeout and drink demon brew. The only bad thing about playing with demons – one of the few species in the Lore that could contend with the Lykae in a physical contest – was their continual ‘brew breaks.’ Only seemed fair that Garreth and his kinsman shoot copious amounts of whiskey to mitigate their […]

There’s nothing quite like reading that final book in your favorite young adult trilogy. Such an exciting and emotional time! Drop Everything and Listen to Neverwhere from BBC Radio

April 1, 2014 by Erin

Neverwhere is a six part radio adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s 1996 fantasy novel of the same name. It was dramatized by Dirk Maggs. Fun fact! Neil Gaiman originally wrote Neverwhere as a companion book to a BBC television miniseries that he co-created. I suppose this radio version more accurately should be called an adaptation of a televised production instead of a novel, but I’ve never seen the miniseries and it generally is not as well-known as the book. We’ll just forget […]

Happy International Women’s Day!

March 8, 2014 by Ladies On The Shelf

Today marks International Women’s Day, a day to recognize how far the world has come in gender equality, inspire positive changes for the future and encourage advocacy for women’s rights across the globe. On top of that, International Women’s Day is a day to celebrate the women in our lives who inspire us – from our mothers and sisters, to our friends, to our role models who motivate us to change our world. Of course, we, the authors of Ladies […]

I Read Faster When There’s Wizardry Involved – Bingo Update

February 27, 2014 by Caitlin

The score is 3 (Cait) to 2 (Jessi) to 1 (Erin)! Keep track of our Literary Bingo progress here.  Bingo Square: Read an Urban Fantasy, Read a Book in a Week Book: Storm Front (Dresden Files #1), Jim Butcher First, a word on the “read a book in a week square.” As previously mentioned, I have been on something of a hiatus from reading. I could make excuses here about work, life and other distractions, but that’s unnecessary. The point […]
