Ladies On The Shelf

There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written, or badly written. That is all. – Oscar Wilde

Who Wrote It Better: February Edition

February 23, 2015 by Jessi

As embarrassing as it may be for one celebrity to be caught wearing the same thing as another, many of us common folk find true delight in comparing the two and declaring a winner. This fashion face-off of “Who Wore It Better?” has inspired a literary twist in the form of a bookish battle we call “Who Wrote It Better?” Shakespeare’s turn of phrase is better than Right Said Fred’s little turn on the catwalk. (Yeah, on the catwalk!) Why isn’t “February […]

Who Wrote It Better?: Winter Edition

January 21, 2015 by Jessi

As embarrassing as it may be for one celebrity to be caught wearing the same thing as another, many of us common folk find true delight in comparing the two and declaring a winner. This fashion face-off of “Who Wore It Better?” has inspired a literary twist in the form of a bookish battle we like to call “Who Wrote It Better?” Like Coco Chanel, Hawthorne accessorizes perfectly, but instead of donning the iconic Chanel 2.55 handbag, Hawthorn uses personification […]

Book Crafts

November 10, 2014 by Ladies On The Shelf

It *might* be a crime to deface a book. But, admittedly, some books are just not that good. And then there are those that are so mass produced that some are bound to end up in a trashcan anyway, and then what do you do with those extra copies? Books, besides being art in and of themselves, happen to make great source material for art – and sure give new meaning to “recycle, reduce, reuse.” Book crafts are a totally different and […]

Beyond Disney

July 21, 2014 by Ladies On The Shelf

Sometimes, you get a little sick of the iconic Disney princesses. Just a little (and then maybe you go to Disneyland and wish your whole wardrobe could be swathed in Princess Aurora pink). We love ourselves some fairy tales and folklore – especially different adaptations and artwork inspired by tales as old as… well, time. Check out our pins.

Harriet The Spy – the Original Hipster

March 12, 2014 by Ladies On The Shelf

Harriet was wearing glasses without lenses before it was cool. In case you haven’t gotten enough Harriet from us yet (we know we haven’t – check out our group reread discussion and Caitlin’s writing tips from Harriet), we took some extra inspiration from the book and made a Pin board. I have to tell you, it’s probably the most fun I’ve had making a board to date. Check it out!

Brace Yourselves – Black Milk Clothing Game of Thrones Line Is Coming March 11!

March 7, 2014 by Caitlin

If you happen to follow us on Pinterest (shameless plug), you’ll notice we love both literary fashion and bookish art. And while we don’t always love the same literature, one thing’s for damn sure: we LOVE Game of Thrones. Books, TV, Wikis… GIVE IT TO US. So of course it’s thrilling that, in conjunction with the upcoming 4th season of GOT, nerdy-chic spandex clothing company Black Milk Clothing has released a line of GOT-inspired clothing. Launching March 11, this line […]

Got Shelves?

March 6, 2014 by Caitlin

One of the great joys of being an avid reader is collecting your favorite novels and reading them again and again. Collectively, we at Ladies On The Shelf are in the habit of borrowing books from the library or downloading an e-reader copy, and if we love the tome, rushing out to buy the hard copy. Part of that joy is displaying our literary treasures. We’ve scoped some pretty fantastic shelving units and book ends  just for this purpose on […]

Library Chic

February 5, 2014 by Ladies On The Shelf

I love the librarian stereotype – the slight spinster look, chunky glasses, orthopedic shoes, cardigans… Even the all-powerful “Shush!” Having worked at a library for two years, I know that stereotype isn’t precisely true (though I did relish the times I got to tell “No running in the library!”), but I still love to err, fashion wise, on the side of the chic librarian. Demure, slightly old fashioned, and a little crazy cat lady.
