“God Bless Us, Every One!” – Literary Happy Hour

christmas carol 1

“God bless us, every one!”

It’s Christmas, which means we the good authors of Ladies On The Shelf are congregating in our native California, enjoying family and friends and festivities.

Despite holiday distractions, I feel it would be a great shame not to share a final Literary Happy Hour of 2014 with you all. I’ll make it brief, joyful, and jolly, just as a holiday tiding should be.
For inspiration, let’s visit Charles Dickens and his well-loved classic, A Christmas Carol (I bid you to enjoy it in any form this season – my personal favorite is the Muppets version). Appropriately festive and family friendly, and comes with all kinds of inspiration for beverages and toasts!
“A merry Christmas, Bob!” said Scrooge, with an earnestness that could not be mistaken, as he clapped him on the back. “A merrier Christmas, Bob, my good fellow, than I have given you, for many a year! I’ll raise your salary, and endeavour to assist your struggling family, and we will discuss your affairs this very afternoon, over a Christmas bowl of smoking bishop, Bob!” – A Christmas Carol

Smoking Bishop, as detailed by this lovely writer, is a Victorian punch made with wine and spices and port. It’s warm and tingly and tastes just like Christmas.

christnas carol 2

My sister, me and my mother enjoyinng our own variation of Smokinng Bishop at their California home.

If you don’t have 24 hours to wait for fruit to steep, you can make a similarly tasty mulled wine recipe (oh hey, there’s even one from Game of Thrones). Or, I can do you one better: Two For The Bar has created four cocktails inspired by Dickens’ four ghosts. Delicious, creative and an excellent way to drink your way through Scrooge’s change of heart.

Here’s to you, readers, and you, my fellow LOTS bloggers. May your holidays and your new year be filled with love, happiness and literature! Cheers!
